What is LC Phone?
LC Phone is HighLevel's native phone system. It provides phone numbers, SMS/MMS, voice, routing, voicemail, and related features inside the CRM without requiring the agency to set up a separate Twilio account. For U.S. local-number business messaging, A2P 10DLC registration applies.
What is SIM-based SMS?
A SIM-based gateway sends and receives SMS through a real Android device with a carrier SIM. The CRM remains the place where the agency works, but the message transport is the mobile device and wireless carrier rather than LC Phone's application-messaging route.
| Area | LC Phone | SIM-based SMS |
|---|---|---|
| Primary transport | HighLevel native telephony/application messaging | Android phone + carrier SIM |
| Platform billing | Per segment/message type plus carrier and related fees | ASG flat platform tier; carrier plan is separate |
| Traditional A2P/10DLC path | Required for U.S. local-number A2P business messaging | Not the traditional LC Phone/Twilio 10DLC route |
| Physical device required | No dedicated Android gateway | Yes |
| Voice | Strong native calling integration | ASG is positioned primarily as SMS infrastructure |
| Operations | HighLevel manages most of the telephony layer | Agency manages device health, SIM and carrier account |
| Best fit | All-in-one telephony and lower operational overhead | Predictable SMS platform cost and agency resale packaging |
LC Phone advantages
- No dedicated Android gateway device to maintain.
- Voice and SMS live within the same native phone stack.
- HighLevel handles much of the underlying telephony experience.
- Good fit for agencies that value simplicity over managing another infrastructure layer.
SIM-based SMS advantages
- SMS uses a real carrier mobile number and SIM.
- ASG does not add a per-message platform charge.
- Device-tier pricing can be easier to forecast at higher message volumes.
- The agency can package managed SMS infrastructure as a separate recurring client service.
The tradeoff agencies should understand
Flat platform pricing does not mean zero operational cost. A SIM-based deployment requires compatible Android hardware, carrier service, stable power/data connectivity, responsible messaging practices, and some device management. Carrier fair-use policies still apply.
Likewise, A2P 10DLC is not merely an arbitrary software fee. It is the U.S. carrier framework used for verified business messaging on local 10-digit application routes. SIM-based SMS uses a different transport, but it does not remove consent, opt-out, TCPA, carrier-policy, or other legal responsibilities.
Which should a GHL agency choose?
Use LC Phone when you want the simplest native HighLevel phone system, particularly when voice matters. Explore SIM-based SMS when messaging volume is material, your agency is comfortable operating gateway devices, and you want a predictable infrastructure layer that can become part of your recurring client offer.
